Hello, my name is Laci Potter and I am a Junior at Danville high school. I am in a class called Compass, and this is a class where students are able to explore things that they are interested in. For this semester I have chosen to focus on looking into a career for after high school. For me that career is a physical therapist, I started really getting interested in this field of work after I went through physical therapy after a sports injury. I really was just drawn to the fact that there are always going to be patients that you're going to need to help and that in the job you are staying active, and learning about ways to heal the body. As an athlete I always was looking for good stretches to do to help my body and from doing this product I have learned a lot about some really good ways to help your body.
For my product 1 I was really able to focus on all of the tasks that a physical therapist goes through throughout the day. I wrote an email to a clinic in St. Johnsbury Vt, asking about what a physical therapist day looks like, what you need to go through for school to become a physical therapist, and what the different types of programs that you can go through to get ready while in high school to be prepared when entering that type of work. They got back to me and actually sent me a video that answered all of my questions. I took that information and made a google site to blog all of the information that I was able to gather. I also attend a varsity girls soccer game. When I was there I observed what the trainer was doing with the athletes, after the game I then entered all of my thoughts into my site. Another thing that I did for my product 1 was that I actually was able to go to the clinic in St. Johnsbury that I emailed and they actually took me through what a daily day looks like for them. They showed me how they develop a plan that works for each patient and then the program that they use when making a plan. They also showed me how to look at all of the previous patients' injuries or problems if they had any and then we would take that information and narrow it down to possibly the problem that they are facing right now. For me this was a very amazing experience, I really enjoyed being able to watch what a physical therapist does each day, and all of the different elements that go into working with just one patient. Product 1 made me grow my interest in physical therapy even more, but I still wanted to explore what all the different branches are in this career. So what I decided to do for my product 2 was to do a lot of research and put it all into a sideshow of all of the different branches of physical therapy. Being able to have all of this information into one slideshow allowed me to be able to look at all of the different branches at once and then decide what one that I liked more or that I found more interesting. My plan for the rest of my high school career is to take some classes that I’m going to need to enter in the work field. By doing this it will allow me to be much more prepared. This class has helped me find out what I really can see myself doing long term after highschool. And I found out that I really liked physical therapy, but I also really love sports. So what I am looking into in my product 3 is a traveling physical therapist, because that type of work is far more interesting to me then just a physical therapist. I plan to present a fully completed website that has all of the information that I have gathered throughout the semester of Compass.

My name is Delaney Nelson and I am a Junior at Danville School. I'm in an independent class called Compass and everyone in the class is researching a career they are thinking about going into after high school or just something they are interested in and would like to know more about. I have taken this class at least four times since my freshman year and have changed my research path three or more times throughout the last three years. Over the summer of 2021 I worked at a daycare called ABC LOL. I saw children who were not being taken care of like they needed to be, such as: not having clean clothes, not getting enough sleep, and being unable to eat healthy meals at home. After working in this facility for a while everything I was seeing got me thinking about what I personally could do to help not only these children but other children who may be going through the same struggles or worse.
This semester I have decided to research becoming a social worker. This sparked my interest after seeing some of the children I work with. I have been assigned three products, a final product, and this blog post. These are all projects to study different things within this career that I may be interested in or just want to know more about in the field and to give other people a better understanding of what a social worker is, how they make a major impact in today's society, and the different job opportunities they have depending on their degree. After researching into this job field I have decided I would like to still have a career to help children but not becoming a social worker. Instead of becoming a social worker I have decided to look more into early childhood education. Throughout these products I have learned beyond the information I thought I was going to learn about what kind of people are most important in a child's life. Studying social work has been a huge stepping stone into deciding where I want to go with my future and what classes are going to benefit me most while still in high school. After going back and forth with having to spending six years in college to get my masters degree in social work to sticking with being a daycare provider I have decided I don't think either would be a good fit. After thinking about what I want to do with my future I have decided that after high school it would be better to go into early childhood education. Going into this career field is just as important as social work. This class has brought me to broaden my knowledge of not only working with children but how the world can be so cruel to them. Going into the field of childhood education may be able to make a big difference on how children view the world and the people they interact with. Hi my name is Pascal Deppisch. I am currently a senior at Danville High School and I am enrolled in Compass class, which is a self driven independent study class overseen by Ms Keach and Ms Modry. For my Compass class I chose to learn more about what makes a great runner and if you can become a great runner through hard work or if it’s an inherent ability. I will be studying the different types of training, and anatomical make up in different athletes. I chose this topic because I am a runner myself and am very interested in learning more about this field. I have been connecting with many College and elite coaches to learn and compare their different training methods, while trying to find out which is the superior training method for any single athlete.
For my first product I compiled a list of the different types of running there are and put them into a website and wrote a little bit about them. I used this project to mainly find my focus point on what aspects of running I wanted to study, and I came up with studying cross country and track. I have met with a few coaches in my free time and had them explain their training process with me and how they individualize specific training plans per athlete to suit their needs and running styles. I looked into training Mid level high school athletes up to elite college and senior level athletes. The training style that stuck out to me the most was that of the Ingebrigtsen family which keeps their easy run pace over 8:30 per mile, and while running intervals they track their lactate levels to make sure they’re training to peak performance without over training. This is a great example of how different training methods are needed for different athletes as some need slower easy runs and some gain higher lactate levels while running, such as middle distance athletes like elite 800m runners only train about 60 to 70 miles a week with a higher percentage of that being speed work, verses elite marathoners some weeks going over 140 miles. For my next product I will be looking further into the muscular and cardiovascular differences between elite level runners and the average runner. This will help to answer one of my questions about if running is an inherent ability or if you can just train hard to get there. I will also use skills that I have learned while learning about Radiology, which is a career that I hope to go into in the later future. After I finish my next product I will be putting together everything that I have learned in this semester into a training plan that can be suited to different runners of different styles and athletic abilities. I hope to continue expanding my knowledge on this subject and that others will find the same interest that I have in running. Do you ever just not know what to read? Like you’re standing in the book store just looking at all the shelves overwhelmed because you have no clue what to read. Do you go with mystery? Fantasy? Horror? Romance? Then you start crying because you just don't know. Ok well maybe you don’t cry but you know what I mean.
I do the exact same thing. I never know what to read so that's why I created my Compass project book exploration. I read book reviews and ask around and see what people say. I usually ask them a few questions like:
After completing the recommended book I create a poster or essay with my thoughts/ review of the book. By the end of this class I hope to have a book review wall created in our school library to help kids like me who struggle with finding books to read. The recommended books might not be in our library but could also be found on Listen Up Vermont an Ebook/audio book site that we have access to. So if you are like me and need help finding a book to read, watch out for the book recommendation wall! What will be reviewed first?: My name is Lilley Anderson, I am a Junior at Danville High School. Currently I am taking Compass, an independent study class. For this class I have chosen to research animals in the Film Industry. I have always loved animals and recently I have become more interested in the Film Industry. So I decided that combining these interests of mine could make a fun project. However, for Compass we have multiple assignments that create the project itself, we call these products.
We start by doing what is called the Mini Product, this is the introduction to what you want to learn. It will also help you decide if what you choose is a good fit. Then we move on to Product 1, the overview product. After that is the Laser Focus Product/Product 2. This Product allows you to focus on one specific aspect of your project. Next, the second to last product, is the Alternative Perspective. This product is about looking into either a different side of your project or something similar to it. And the last of the Products is Product 4. For the Mini Product I created a slideshow, this slideshow contained any basic or beginning information on Animals in Film such as, what an animal actor is, what their casting sessions look like, and how they need to be trained. I also found a couple movies that interested me and researched them briefly, which helped me get a better understanding on what the training for these animals looks like. After completing this product we moved onto Product 1. For this Product I built a website about Dogs in the Film Industry. I included deeper information on the process of having dogs in movies, training and techniques, and the lives of the dogs on and off set. I also made a page dedicated to information on a couple specific animal trainers. For Product 2, the laser focus, I decided to look deeper into the Bears who live at the Wasatch Rocky Mountain Wildlife Ranch. This is a Ranch owned by Doug and Lynne Seus. I have always been intrigued by these bears because I have seen them perform in many movies. After gathering information on their lives I created a book. This book was made from an old discarded library book. I used construction paper to cover the pages, then I printed out my slideshow with the writing and pictures. The slideshow pages were then glued into the book and onto the cover. At the moment we are working on Product 3. For this I have chosen to research the difference in using real animals in film vs using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) animals. I will be using the information I find to write a compare and contrast essay. Along with this Product we have been assigned a poster. Each of our posters will be used for a poster fair taking place in the Library. At this time I am unsure of what I would like to do for Product 4. However, I have brainstormed multiple ideas such as, coming up with an animal training plan, adapting my favorite animal story into a film/making a script from it, or researching the emotional power of animals in film. This is my third semester of Compass so far. I enjoy the freedom this class gives me to explore what I may want to do after high school and I am currently planning on taking it again in the Spring. Once again, I find myself back in the Compass program here at Danville High School. I, Cooper Anderson, am a Senior here. Making this my final year of Compass. I of course thought that I would most likely work on yet another film project. The majority of my previous projects of varying success levels were film related, so why shouldn’t this one be too? I got to thinking, what should my project be? At first I thought about continuing the more comedic horror series I only got to make a very rushed pilot for last year before it was shut down by COVID-19 restrictions. But then I thought, since this is my last year, why not reach back to my first project in Sophomore year? Some may recall the unnerving ragged puppets, or the sketches of twisted clowns, or the (poorly made) burnt hand. In the tenth grade I had been working on the first season of a horror show titled Foreboding. The premise was an online show which would tell a different horror story every season. The first season was named “Snuffles” after the antagonist in clown attire. Overall I still enjoy the plot concept I had come up with, and even the characters. That being said, it was obvious in my writing that I was younger and a less experienced writer and filmmaker. So I thought that it could be fun to reach back and revive the long dead project to remake it with an older more experienced mind. As I feel the concept deserves another shot at existing, another shot at frightening viewers. The first thing I did was I went back and looked through all of my older documents. Scripts, planning documents, and I reminded myself of the plot. I pinpointed plot holes, characters and scenes that could be cut, new characters and scenes that could replace the old ones, and even brought back some scrapped concepts that never made it into the older version of the story. I then began to write the new draft of the script, and right away it became apparent that the dialogue is far more intelligently written. As I write more and more, I realize the story is overall much more disturbing than it had been. The graphic scenes and displays of violence being far less watered down, the antagonist is a little more stalker-esque and less comedic, and the protagonist has more depth to his character. Next I drew new character designs for some additional puppets for the show. Some may remember Benson the blue monster and Farmer Mike. While some of the newer puppets are still less prominent in the show as Mike or especially Benson, their designs are still creepily uncanny. I also have fixed up the older puppets since by now they had been sitting around rarely used or even touched for years. So of course from sitting in storage, and age, they were kind of beat up and in need of some repairs. Overall I feel pre production has been rather successful so far. I will soon begin to cast. Of course, some of the original actors wanted to return while others did not. Foreboding will begin filming next semester when the snow starts to melt, and release onto YouTube around the end of the school year. I am doing an independent study about the different types of psychology and the types of jobs in the field. I chose this because I am interested in helping people and these types of jobs would be good to help others like counseling which I have done a lot of research on.
I started my project by taking quizzes to learn what type of job suits me most and then I reflected on how well and accurate the quiz was.. I did a slideshow and used screen shots to show the quizzes I took. For Product Two I designed a counseling room using an app called 3D Home Styler. Then I talked about why I put in what I put in for the two rooms. One is for kids in a waiting room with toys and entertaining things for them. The other room is the counselor's room where you have a couch and fireplace in the background and picture frames and books so you can feel safe and comfortable. In Product Three I made two people that are a married couple who are experiencing problems. I came up with a fake situation to help me learn how a real counselor would fix their problems or at least help them. There are lots of jobs in psychology. There is couples therapy, Counseling, Human services, Family psychologist.Any of the ones I listed if I could get the chance to do them I would. I think it would be interesting and not a boring job because you can help people live a better life. My name is Brooke Hale and I am a student at Danville. In my Compass independent study class I am learning about Interior Design as a career. I have always had a passion for Interior design. My favorite types of interior design are Shabby Chic, and Modern. I love redesigning different rooms, and I just love the thought of being able to design people's houses or my own. I have researched a lot about Interior Design for the products I have done in compass. I have learned a lot more about Interior design that I did not know before. For my projects I have created houses on a 3D interior design app and I am also going to redesign an area in my house or an area in Danville school. We have done 2 products and we have 2 more products to complete. I have done a google slide for the mini product, I have created a house with certain types of designs on an app, and I have also created a customer of my own to create an apartment for. The next product I will be doing is the alternative perspective product. We also have a project bio, and an elevator pitch left to do. Throughout doing these products I have been learning a lot. Designing things online does not interest me as much as designing actual rooms in places. Colleges that I would consider going to for Interior Design are New York school of Design and Bay Path University. I don't really have a full idea of where I want to go because I have not looked into colleges enough to know. I will choose the college that can give the best education for Interior Design and that can lead you somewhere good after college. Bay Path University is a good option to go for me because it is not too far from Danville and it probably has good education. What I'm doing this semester in Compass is learning about mechanics. This is a job that I'm interested in and might want to do when I'm older. I have always wanted to work on trucks and other vehicles. I've been doing research on this for a while now and I decided to do my first project on small engine mechanics. I wanted to do something with my four wheeler because I needed to replace some things anyway. I decided to replace my electric shifter because whenever I would go into reverse it wouldn't shift back into gear and it would have a hard time shifting up and back down. To fix this I had to order the new part and get all the tools that I needed for this job. The first thing that I did was take the plastics off. After that I had to start to unscrew the bolts that held the shifter on. After that I had to pull it off and make sure that I didn't drop any of the gears. When I got them all out I had to clean all the old grease and dirt off of them because that was what was stopping the gears from moving. After that I put the new shifter on and screwed the bolts back on. When I got all the parts back together it was fixed and worked perfectly. Next in Compass I want to do more projects about mechanics and do hands-on things. I want to do more projects like my last one where I can work on and fix four wheelers. I would also like to do more research about what mechanics do in more detail. |
