This semester during compass I have been studying equine assisted activities and therapies. I got into this topic a few months ago when I was trying to figure out what to do for my senior project. After coming across Rhythm of The Reins, a therapeutic riding facility, I quickly found that I needed to do some in depth research about it.
I have spent most of my time in class doing research and outside of school at the barn doing different activities, and learning new skills. At the barn I spend most of my time doing “the dirty work”: mucking out stalls, feeding, filling water buckets, turning out horses and bringing them in. When I'm not doing that I'm either participating in a riding lesson or helping with one. In school I spend my compass classes doing in depth research on different things. We have done 2 products so far and for them I researched: What Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies are and what equipment is needed for therapy lessons. In the future I am doing a couple more products that include: the barn management side of things, and then basically putting all of my learning together for my final project. As a senior I am required to complete a senior project. With my senior project also being based around therapeutic riding I felt that giving myself the extra time to study the topic would be really beneficial, and it has been!! With my senior project going down a little bit of a different road I still have to do some research outside of class but inside of class research is also really important. My plan for my senior project is to give background on my learnings, experiences, and also create mock lessons plans for riders with different disabilities. The research that I have done in class will really play a role in the mock lesson plans. Learning about all the different equipment is a key factor since different riders need different assistance. With taking this class I have helped myself in so many ways. Keeping my stress levels down but also being able to stay on top of myself so I don't get behind. After high school I plan on attending Vermont Technical Colleges Veterinarian technician program. Doing this research and volunteer work will help me prepare for this step in my life and allow me to become better and even more experienced.

My name is Delaney Nelson and I am a Junior at Danville School. I am in a class called Compass. This is a class where students are able to explore things that they are interested in. For this semester I have chosen to focus on looking deeper into two careers I'm interested in after high school. Those careers would be mechanics and a form of child care. Personally I have taken this class at least four times since my freshman year and have changed my research path more than six times already throughout the last three years.
