Hello! Our names are Sloane and Kinsey and for our compass project, we are teaming up to cook many different dishes. We decided to team up after realizing that we both were interested in the same project and credit. It has been both helpful and a challenge to work in a pair. While we can work on things more efficiently, we also have to learn how to combine our ideas into one cohesive product. As we are going for a Global Citizenship credit, we decided to make food from other countries and research their origins. We decided to do this project because we wanted to have fun while we learn and cooking sounded like a great way to do so. We framed the project around Global Citizenship because we needed credits in that area.

My name is Charlie Millard and I'm a junior at Danville School. This blog is for my compass class. For my project I am rebuilding a laptop and researching how computers have evolved over the years. I chose this project because, for most of my life, computers have been something I’ve found cool and something that I can concentrate on. After switching my topic to computers, I did Product 2. Product 2 is the Laser Focus Product. For this product I made a slideshow about how computers evolved over the years, starting in 1947 up to the present day. I also made a list of modern affordable parts to rebuild a laptop. The next project I will be working on will be taking apart the laptop. I will be documenting my process by taking pictures. My whole project overall is about everything to do with arthritis in horses. I decided to do this topic because I wanted to know more detailed information about horse arthritis. A lot of horses that I've ridden and shown have had it and I've always wanted to know more about it. The horse I've had since I was 9 has gotten many treatments for it and I want to understand how it works. There is no known cure but there are many many ways to help and prevent horses from getting arthritis in the older years. Some ways to help are to keep your horse at a healthy weight, feed them supplements and vitamins to help with joint health and stronger treatments the vet can do.
I've done my mini product as an intro on how common it is and what arthritis in horses looks like. I did my product 1 broad overview on where it happens and how the vet can diagnose it. I also researched on how to treat it in product 1. My product 2 laser focus on the 3 different types of arthritis horses can get. I will work on my alternative perspective on human arthritis and im not sure about my synthesis yet. I've been riding horses since I was 4. I've always been obsessed with horses, anything and everything to do with them. So I want to do my compass class based on something with horses. To change subjects for a second I've had my horse Summer for about 5 years now and within those 5 years I've built a bond with her. While I was building that bond I slowly began to realize she was going blind. This year she got her left eye removed in november. I'm also teaching her liberty to help her know where her feet are, But along with being blind she also had a navicular.
My project is Horse Blindness. I decided on the topic because it was most relative to what was going on in my life and with my horse. The products I have worked on so far are the broad overview, the laser focus and the mini project. For my mini project I was on my horse Summer and her blindness and how it affected her. For my broad overview I did the different causes of horse blindness. And then for my laser focus I did research on End the Blind. For my product 3 my alternative perspective is going to be navicular disease, what it is and how it happens. My name is Molly McAlenney, and I’m a senior. I am currently taking this class called Compass in which you can do an independent study on any topic of your interest for any credit of your choice, for the whole semester. My topic I chose to research about is pathology, the study of diseases. I would have never thought I would want to learn about pathology. When I was younger I’ve always wanted to become a chef and cook and bake. I still do, but I thought it would be cool to work in a lab and study all sorts of things. I chose to research pathology because I want to become a pathologist in the future. And I am doing an internship/job shadow at NVRH next semester.
There are five projects you have to do over the course of the semester. The Mini Product, Broad Overview, Laser Focus, Alternative Perspective, and the Synthesis. We’ve only done three products in class so far: the Mini Product, the Broad Overview, and the Laser Focus. My Mini Product was just a small essay about the history of pathology. I just wrote about what pathology is, how it was founded and who founded it, the types of pathology, and the challenges pathologists face. At the beginning of this semester I chose my credit to be history. But then I changed it to be an English credit because I changed my schedule up a bit for next semester because of the internship. My first product I did was a slideshow on famous pathologists. I looked up four pathologists and wrote a little about them and their relations to pathology. On my second product, the Laser Focus, I did a poster on lung cancer. I did all the basic things like what it is, the symptoms, who’s at risk, and prevention for it. My next product I am working on is product 3, the Alternative Perspective. I did have an idea on what to do for it, but I’m not sure about it anymore. So I don’t know what I’m going to do for my next product yet, but I’ll figure it out soon. What is my project?
My project is learning Spanish through Duolingo, and comparing the Russian Duolingo to the Spanish Duolingo. Over the course of around 3 weeks I practiced Spanish every day. I wrote a short essay detailing my experience with both Duolingo’s and how I thought they compare. I said why I switched languages, and what was easier and harder about Russian vs Spanish. I also said how the two Duolingo languages differ, mainly the interface and games. Why did I decide to pursue this project? As Russian was getting harder and harder I found it less motivating to learn. I was still practicing and one day I figure I should learn a language that will serve a purpose in the near future as opposed to the rare case in which I would need to speak Russian What products have I worked on so far? I have completed product 1,, mini product, mini product reflection, and laser focus. What will I work on next? I will work on the alternative perspective product next. My hopes for that is expanding my vocabulary in Spanish, and hear from different Spanish speakers around Danville School. I would like to see if the teachers think Duolingo is a reliable source or not. In the coming weeks I will continue to work on my Spanish through Duolingo. My goal is to be able to talk casually with someone in Spanish and hold a conversation. Compass is an independent study class where you can choose to focus on anything of your interest. Personally I have lots of interest but I decided to focus on a career I am hoping to pursue. My project is on physical therapy and learning about the different fields/levels of PT. As an athlete I’ve experienced physical therapy through a patient's perspective. I wanted to gain a different perspective on physical therapy and athletic training and am hoping to broaden my knowledge and pursue physical therapy/athletic training in college. I started off on a completely different path looking at different dog breeds, it made me realize I already knew a lot of the information and I wasn't learning anything new. I then was looking through other interests in my life that I would want to explore and learn more about. I have a lot of PT history but only have information from a patient perspective. I then found it interesting to learn about how PT’s do their job. I have worked on what the benefits are by practicing physical therapy and how it prevents injuries more. And I have overviewed all of my past injuries and how physical therapy helped or could have helped those injuries recover as an athlete. I want to start leading my project into the athletic training aspect of physical therapy.
The project I have been working on throughout the semester for COMPASS is science lesson plans for kindergarteners. This project, working and looking into education, is possibly something I would like to do in the future. This project has some challenges but I have easy access to getting an understanding of what I am learning about because teachers are everywhere at school and they are willing to help. My biggest challenge with this project is I have anxiety so speaking in front of a class is a huge struggle for me. I chose to do science because I need more science credits. I also struggle with science so this is a creative way to focus on a possible career while also getting a science credit without having to be in a traditional classroom setting. I decided to pursue this project because during the summer I got my first job working with kids. I did 11+ hours of online training to get my certificate to be able to work with children in a daycare setting. I worked at a summer camp for 6 weeks handling kids ages 3-8 years old. I realized I really enjoyed working with children about this age but I didn't know what went into the behind-the-scenes of teaching. I chose this topic because I wanted to figure out whether or not teaching would be a career that I would like to pursue after high school. I chose to focus on kindergarten because I am familiar with working with this age group. I also chose it because the kindergarten teacher at my school is one of my friends' moms so I know her pretty well. After working on this project since the beginning of the school year I have decided that teaching doesn’t interest me but I would pursue it if the career I am interested in right now doesn’t work out. The products I have worked on so far are the Mini Product, Product 1, and Product 2. For the Mini Product, I talked to the Danville kindergarten teacher and went over a unit plan that I will be helping her teach her students. The lesson plans had to do with living vs nonliving things. She showed me how lesson plans should be made and what they should look like after being put on paper. Overall, she gave me an understanding of how lesson plans are made and I got an understanding of what I will be helping teach later in the semester. Then I wrote a reflection on how the meeting went with the kindergarten teacher and some thoughts and ideas about the unit plan. For Product 1, I created a slideshow comparing and contrasting different middle school and kindergarten lesson plans. I wrote down the activities that are included in the lesson plans and what they learn. Then I wrote down similarities and differences. At the end of the slideshow, I reflected on what I learned and how my experience in these grades compared to the lesson plans that are being taught now. For the last product we have created so far, Product 2, I created my own science lesson plan for kindergarteners. I set up the lesson plan the same way that I set up the lesson plans in the mini product when working with a professional. The lesson plan was about what type of clothing you should wear for certain types of weather and seasons. After the lesson plan was complete, I wrote a reflection explaining why I made certain choices, some challenges if this lesson plan was used in a classroom setting, and how the teacher could help kids struggling. Next, I will be working on my Alternative Perspective Product. For the Alternative Perspective, I plan on creating an English lesson plan for kindergarten. I chose to do an English lesson plan because it isn’t science but it is one of the subjects that is really important to learn and understand at a young age. I will do a reflective piece of the lesson plan after I create it as I did with all the other products. After creating the alternative perspective, I will start working with the kindergarteners in the school and helping Bobbie Copen teach a science unit plan. The unit plan is the unit plan that I wrote down and met with Bobbie for the mini product. I will be in the classroom to observe while also helping the kids. After I help with the unit plan I will write reflective pieces about the experiences. For my project I wanted to do something in baking because I love to do it and I wanted to do something I like to do. I have liked to bake for a while. I would do baking at home but I would only be able to make things from a box. And I wanted the experience of real baking. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to bake. In my experience baking was always super easy because I would just have to add a few ingredients then mix and bake. But actual baking is more complex than that. I have to get everything right and if one thing goes wrong the whole thing is messed up.
In my past projects for this class I have done some research. I decided because it was a history credit I am trying to get so I researched the history of baking. I looked at different recipes from the old days and tried to see if anything was different. I had trouble finding something that was different in the recipes so I decided to look at the WAY they would bake it. Then I moved on and actually decided to bake something. I chose a recipe that was a little too hard and it failed. I was trying to bake a cake with the wrong recipe and no internet to look it up. I baked another thing, french macaroons. And it was also a huge fail. I had chosen things that were out of my skill zone. I learned from it and decided that I needed to be more realistic about what I was baking. These were for an alternative perspective and I was trying to bake recipes from different cultures. I was supposed to do three but I didn't know we had a time limit so I wasn't able to do it. For the baking I obviously had to have the ingredients which meant I had to buy some. But I wasn't about to go out and buy 50 dollars worth of food for a school project. So I used the school's gift cards to buy my ingredients. Later on in the project Laser Focus I needed more supplies because I was about to bake something else. But the gift cards were empty because others were using it for their project too. So I needed to put in a request for money from the school. Which took a while to figure out. And my plan got ruined. I was supposed to bake the recipe multiple times to perfect it but I only had time for once. But my plan for the cinnamon buns (which is what i was baking) was a lot better than i did in my last project where just went for it. |
