Hi my name is Carlie Beliveau. I am a high school student at Danville High school and I am currently taking a Compass class, which is allowing me to learn about any topic I'm interested in for a credit. In this Compass class I chose to study more about child development and more about the young years of a child. I chose this topic because I have a strong passion for working with children and want to proceed with this into my future. I have been learning more on this topic by using a child development textbook called The Developing Person By Kathleen Stassen Berger. Which is teaching me many things I didn't know. I not only have been using my text book I also have been working at a daycare every morning.
I have been working at ABC & LOL Child Care Center in St. Johnsbury, Vermont. In the center, I work with all different age groups from newborns to early adolescents. While at the daycare, I always give 100% of my energy and time to all the kids. I really focus on each and every child’s personalities and try to have one-on-one time with them so then I can get a better understanding of what that child needs or likes. I work every morning at the daycare from 6:30AM to 10:00AM.
When I get to the daycare there are many things to do cause there are only usually three of us in the morning to open at 630. When we first arrive we have to get all the classrooms prepared for the kids to come in and start the day, at the daycare we don't have breakfast till 8:30 so most of the kids who come in early can get a snack that we get for them. When there start to be more kids and staff we start breaking the kids into their assigned class rooms, I usually take the wobblers into their class room. Those kids are around 1-1 ½, once we get into the classrooms I start to do diapers, we have a pretty good set schedule that works for everyone.
After I get done at the daycare I then go home to work on my homework which includes Early Childhood Development class. This class is self-driven and is overseen by Ms. Keach and Ms. Parent. Each month to prove I have learned the information, I have to come up with something to show them the work I had been learning. I enjoy this class because I am exploring something I would like to do in my future and it's something I have a huge passion for.
