Currently here at Danville school, we have a new developing program called Epic Journey, which is an in-school internship program that students apply for to further their education, all the while still earning credit. “Epic” stands for Exploring Personal Interests through Career. There are a variety of Epic Journeys available through our Pathways program, and the Epic Journey that I chose was an internship for a creative writing class. In order to participate in this program, I was required to apply, and also be interviewed by Ms. Keach as to why I would be fit for the job, where I explained that I have received high honors for all of my English classes, I excel in poetry recitation and performing, and I have great people skills such as communication, positivity, and understanding, which is why I believed I was fit for the role. When I was hired for the job, Ms. Keach and I immediately went to work on planning out the semester.
My main focus for this internship was to plan a workshop dedicated to Poetry Out Loud recitation and performance for our Creative Writing poetry unit. And so, I reached out to former Vermont Poetry Out Loud State Coordinator, Morgan Irons, and asked if she would be willing to assist me in leading a poetry workshop here at Danville. She delightfully agreed, and so we planned to meet to discuss the plan of the workshop, where we decided that Morgan could recite a poor performance of her poem, and then follow with a good performance. Students would be able to comment on what they noticed and would also be able to give Morgan constructive feedback based on her poor performance. After, each student would then perform their own poem for the class, and would receive constructive feedback from both Morgan and I, as well as their classmates. On the day of the workshop, students responded really well from what they were learning. Morgan, Ms. Keach, and I were all very impressed with students and their courage to get up and perform in front of people. It was fun and very inspiring working with Morgan, and I was very grateful to have such a talented performer help us with our poetry workshop. Aside from the workshop and poetry, I was also responsible for creating lesson plans for when Ms. Keach was absent, assisting students with their work, and creating a layout as well as editing our class journal, the Route Two Review. Overall, I heavily enjoyed being an intern for Ms. Keach and was able to learn many valuable skills like how to engage an audience or a group of students, how to pass knowledge on in a creative way, and how to be good at time management and planning. These skills will always be valuable and of importance to my life and career. I am very glad I took the opportunity to apply for this internship, and highly recommend any high school student attending Danville to check out the Epic Journey program for internships or jobs that would interest them.
