COMPASS is a student-designed independent study. With the support of a mentor, students develop an independent course of study and complete a semester-long project based on that area of study.
Students work with mentors to identify learning goals and a project timeline.
Students participating in COMPASS work alongside a cohort of other students pursuing independent COMPASS studies.
A weekly seminar taught by an independent learning advisor gives students the tools to structure and plan effective independent studies.
At the end of the semester, students exhibit their learning and products and gain academic or transferable skills credit based on their completion of their learning goals.
COMPASS Project Examples:
A survey of interior design principles and completion of an interior design portfolio.
A study of the history of knitting and completion of a yarn-bomb project.
A fantasy world-building project that includes the study of geography, sociology, and linguistics.
