My name is Keenan Evans and I am a sophomore at Danville School. I am in a class called Compass, which is a class created for independent study and for students to focus and learn on topics that they are interested in. For my topic I chose to learn about equine massage therapy. I started by researching a few different careers that would involve me working with large animals like horses or cows, in hopes that I would find one career that sparked my interest. I decided that equine massage therapy was something that I really wanted to learn about.
I wanted to learn about massage therapy because I wanted to learn different massage and muscle exercises and their benefits to horses. I also wanted to learn ways that I could help my horse perform her best, and I also wanted her to be able to compete in sports that involve her muscles and ligaments to be in top condition. Equine massage therapy can also be helpful for spotting or preventing injury, which is extremely important for horses. I have completed my mini product and two other products so far. For these products I researched basic equine anatomy, different careers involving large animals, and stretching exercises for horses legs and neck. My next product I will work on will be my alternative perspective product. For this product I will look at a different aspect of this topic.

This is now my 4th Compass class, and for this project I am focusing my attention on my recently acquired car, a 2011 BMW 335d. I bought the car for cheap due to it having multiple problems that needed to be fixed, and my goal for this project is to restore the car and build it to last another 100,000 miles (currently 94k miles).
For my mini project I was occupied with another topic, however I changed it to fixing and modifying my car for project 1. For this product, I compiled a list of things that the car needed, along with things that I wanted to do. This turned into a 4 page document with links for parts and guides on how to do each of the things, as I intend on performing most of the labor myself. I also began ordering essential things, such as light bulbs, sensors, oil, fuel additives and a couple cosmetic things. Moving onto product 2, I started a slideshow where I compiled the things I had done to the car, and plan on using this as a way of showing my progress throughout the semester. I also researched the most common failure points with the car, and was pleasantly surprised by the reliability the engine offered. For product 3, I plan on doing some photography with the car, as it's an alternative perspective project. This will include general photography research and practice, along with finding good spots to shoot and making sure the car is clean. I expect the car to look significantly better in the future, however this will be a good way of gauging the progress when I look back later. For the final product, I plan on finishing my slideshow and presenting it, along with having the car there to show. I’ll likely create a poster also. By then, I hope to have the car in proper mechanical condition, and to have all the maintenance done on it. It should also be noted that I’m shooting for an elective credit in the class, meaning I have a lot more freedom to have fun and enjoy the work I do, rather than focusing my attention on the grading aspect of it. In the future, one of my career paths involves some form of automotive engineering, so having this car and doing a bunch of the work for it will give me a general understanding of cars, which I will hopefully be able to carry over to the future. I also plan on working on the car following the class, when summer comes around for example, I intend on painting it, putting new wheels on and possibly coil overs. My name is Merrick Cote and I am a student at Danville High School. I am currently in COMPASS class which is a self-led independent study class. For my independent study, I chose to look into hats and everything that involves them. Since I’ve been growing out my hair I have been using hats pretty religiously to keep my hair out of my face until my hair is long enough to put up.
I began my research with a mini-product that looked at common modern hats and how they’re made. I made a slideshow to present my findings in my research for each hat which consisted of baseball caps, beanies, Ushanka hats, and trucker hats. I found it interesting how the manufacturing process of baseball caps is a really precise and long process that I didn’t realize was there. For my first product, I chose to look into the history of hat fashion in the United States from the 1900s-2000s. It was a slideshow that covered every decade to see how hat fashion changed throughout the decades. Something I found intriguing was how many decades had the same hat fashion but the hat itself changed over time not the type of hat. For my second product, I made an essay on the history of Gucci as a company because they sell high-quality hats along with its many other products and I wanted to see how such a company comes to exist. I highlighted its history from its inception in 1921 to the present day and how it has affected the company over the years and shaped it into what it looks like today. An interesting thought of mine while researching this is how the Gucci founder was a bellhop at hotels and the way his fashion design was shaped was from learning rich people's fashion tastes while being a bellhop. For my future products in COMPASS I will continue to learn more about hats. I want to learn how they shape society and certain groups of people and why people wear hats, what’s their motive for wearing a hat. I also want to make at least one type of hat by the end of the semester to see the process and to get a taste of how the hat fashion felt physically. I will learn what different types of headwear to look like and how they are similar and differ from traditional hats. Hi, my name is Lilley Anderson, I am a Senior at Danville School. I am enrolled in a class called Compass, which is an independent study class. The general outline, which can be altered, is created by Ms. Keach and Ms. Modry. I enjoy the freedom that this class offers hence why I have taken this class 5 times including this semester’s class.
Since it is an Independent Study class I chose to study various different aspects of the film industry. I hope to learn about behind the scenes, funny blooper scenes, deleted scenes, some famous movies, and about actor’s lives. Compass is broken up into five different Products, Mini Product, Product 1, Product 2, Product 3, and Product 4. We start by doing what is called the Mini Product, this is the introduction to what you want to learn. It will also help you decide if what you choose is a good fit, it’s also called the Test Drive Product. Then we move on to Product 1, the overview product. After that is the Laser Focus Product/Product 2. This Product allows you to focus on one specific aspect of your project. Next, the second to last product, is the Alternative Perspective. This product is about looking into either a different side of your project or something similar to it. And the last of the Products is Product 4. For the Mini Product I researched basic information on what an actor’s average salary is, pros and cons of the job, and the education. I didn’t have to do much for this aspect of the product because in a previous class I had researched this information in a greater depth. For the second and main part of my Mini Product I researched 5 different actors and made a slideshow which contained all the information I learned. The information I included in each slide was: A biography, their salary and education, movies they have acted in, and a few backstories on their acting career. Next, we move onto Product 1, the overview Product. I think this is my favorite Product so far. I researched the three Jurassic Park movies. I gave an introduction to each movie and wrote about the plot. I researched the cast, found facts and information about the movie, and I added some quotes from actors on filming the movie. Furthermore, I researched one animatronic in particular, The Tyrannosaurus Rex. I created a website which contained all of the information. I gave all three movies their own page, this way I kept everything organized and easy to find. This semester during compass I have been studying equine assisted activities and therapies. I got into this topic a few months ago when I was trying to figure out what to do for my senior project. After coming across Rhythm of The Reins, a therapeutic riding facility, I quickly found that I needed to do some in depth research about it.
I have spent most of my time in class doing research and outside of school at the barn doing different activities, and learning new skills. At the barn I spend most of my time doing “the dirty work”: mucking out stalls, feeding, filling water buckets, turning out horses and bringing them in. When I'm not doing that I'm either participating in a riding lesson or helping with one. In school I spend my compass classes doing in depth research on different things. We have done 2 products so far and for them I researched: What Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies are and what equipment is needed for therapy lessons. In the future I am doing a couple more products that include: the barn management side of things, and then basically putting all of my learning together for my final project. As a senior I am required to complete a senior project. With my senior project also being based around therapeutic riding I felt that giving myself the extra time to study the topic would be really beneficial, and it has been!! With my senior project going down a little bit of a different road I still have to do some research outside of class but inside of class research is also really important. My plan for my senior project is to give background on my learnings, experiences, and also create mock lessons plans for riders with different disabilities. The research that I have done in class will really play a role in the mock lesson plans. Learning about all the different equipment is a key factor since different riders need different assistance. With taking this class I have helped myself in so many ways. Keeping my stress levels down but also being able to stay on top of myself so I don't get behind. After high school I plan on attending Vermont Technical Colleges Veterinarian technician program. Doing this research and volunteer work will help me prepare for this step in my life and allow me to become better and even more experienced. My name is Delaney Nelson and I am a Junior at Danville School. I am in a class called Compass. This is a class where students are able to explore things that they are interested in. For this semester I have chosen to focus on looking deeper into two careers I'm interested in after high school. Those careers would be mechanics and a form of child care. Personally I have taken this class at least four times since my freshman year and have changed my research path more than six times already throughout the last three years.
