Physical Therapy Internship
I am going to college for my masters in athletic training. This interest in physical therapy comes from my grandmother breaking her leg and going through physical therapy. I was fascinated by the process and immediately became intrigued. After further researching the topic, I found that I wanted to incorporate sports and working with athletes. That decision brought me to athletic training. Being able to work directly with athletes, be involved in sports and helping people recover is exactly what I want to do. My internship at Dan Wyand’s opened my eyes to the physical therapy world. Although it is not what I’m going into, it’s very similar and the experience helped me greatly. My internship was at Dan Wyand’s PT and Associates in St. Johnsbury. I worked with different PA’s and a trainer regularly. I was able to sit in on appointments with patients and occasionally perform stretches or feel the area of discomfort. I was also in the gym portion of the facility observing patients and working with the trainer, who provided me with a lot of information. A typical day at my internship consisted of first, seeing if I was able to sit in on an appointment with a patient. If I was able to I would observe and ask questions if I had them. I would follow the PA around until the appointment was over. Then, if it was available, I would sit in on another appointment and do the same thing. If I was not able to go to another appointment, I would go to the gym to work with the trainer. In order to have my internship, I had to communicate with Patricia Forest at NVRH. She got me set up and I had an orientation meeting with her to go over what I would be doing and anything I needed to know. I then had to set up an appointment to get a TB (tuberculosis) test to ensure I was okay to be around patients. Once the results came back negative I was able to start.
