My project started with the focus on music management and turned into something more. Originally I wanted to do a study on music management and business; I wanted to study and explore this because it was the career I wanted to enter after high school.
At the beginning I started by doing a lot of different research. From watching interviews with different people in the business I found one main point being emphasized; focus on catering your talent. This was a very valid point. If I wanted to know how to better manage an artist or label, I would have to know what it was like to be in the artist shoes. When the time for creating my first product came around, I decided I would put myself in the artist's shoes. The shoes were heavy to say the least. I decided my product would be mixing videography and music, essentially creating a music video. For the music video I put together different short clips that I had taken in the last few weeks and put them all together using the app Clips and WeVideo. Using the different programs was a bit hard and definitely came with different struggles. Eventually I edited in the music, by far the hardest part of creating the product. I used the song Purity by A$AP Rocky feat. Frank Ocean. I chose this song because not only are A$AP and Ocean two of my favorite artists, but because the sound of the song fit the vibe of the video. Since the song focuses on the artist reflecting on finding peace of mind and making time for family and friends, I thought it would go perfectly with the simplicity of the clips of my friends enjoying life. After the song was edited in, and the main clips were added, I started to add “b roll”. B roll are clips that might not be the main focus of the product, but rather act as fillers to help fluidity. Once the visuals were completely finished and the music was synced in with the images, I started adding different filters and effects to brighten up and add a more professional video. After talking with my advisors, we decided to add another element to the video; poetry. One of my favorite poet of modern times is Rupi Kaur. A lot of her work focuses on relationships, trauma, growth, and recovery. I chose to use an untitled poem by her about blooming. I chose this poem because like Purity, I think the poem expresses how through friends, family and experiences we grow, or rather bloom. We stay strong and push the people around us to enjoy our lives while also growing and being successful. The poem is about ten lines long, which worked in my favor being that it was so easy to split up. To insert the text into the video I used WeVideo using yellow movie captions. I thought this created a cool element to the video and used the yellow captions because it reminded me of an alternative aesthetic popular on Tumblr. Doing this product, I found out a lot about being a creator. It took a lot of work and creativity to make the video and the challenges that held me back were stressing. Although, I am glad that a created this product. It let me peek into an aspect of being an artist and made me sympathize more with the artists I would potentially be working with. Moving forward with this knowledge has helped me better myself for becoming a manager and working on the business side of art.
